Spiritual Film Series:
Departures

Academy Award Winner for Best Foreign Language Film of 2008, Departures is an extraordinary movie!

Director Yojiro Takita and writer Kundo Koyama examine the rituals surrounding death in Japan with this tale of an out-of-work cellist who accepts a job as a "Nokanashi" or "encoffineer" (the Japanese equivalent of an undertaker) in order to provide for himself and his young wife.

When his orchestra disbands, Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) decides to start over and moves back to his small hometown. Desperate for work, he secretly takes a job as a funeral professional who prepares the deceased for burial and entrance into the next life. But while working with the families of the departed, Daigo embarks on a spiritual journey of his own as he finally experiences the joy and wonder of living.

Heart-warming, funny, wise and profound.

-A film about family, love, discovery and hope!

A beautifully, loving, musically rich film, encompassing an absorbing, moving story; it leaves you contemplating life’s many lessons. By viewing preparation for “the end,” one can gain a greater appreciation for living life fully.
